The students will play or participate in volleyball, soccer, lacrosse and golf at Quinnipiac University, Pace University, Adelphi University, College of St. Rose and Dominican University.
“It takes a village,” said Yorktown Athletic Director Robert Barrett when asked to explain the high number of students who will be playing collegiate sports. “The YAC and youth programs build the foundation. Then the Yorktown School District coaches take it from there and hone their skills."
"We’ve been fortunate to have so many students receive athletic scholarships. It takes a lot of effort from the kids, the coaches, their families and the community. It is a collective effort," Barrett said.
The students gathered with their families and coaches in the guidance center for photos and congratulations.
The future college athletes, and their sports, are:
- Macey Drezek, College of St. Rose: volleyball
- Nick DiGuglielmo, Dominican University: soccer
- Mauricio Arango, Quinnipiac University: soccer
- Christian Torres, Pace University: lacrosse
- Richie Giannasca, Pace University: lacrosse
- Jayla Masci, Adelphi University: golf
Mauricio Arango, who will play soccer for Quinnipiac, said, “Yorktown set me up for success with the coaches and athletic department. We were very successful as a team this year, which helped me to get noticed.”
Jayla Masci, who will play golf at Adelphi University, said she didn’t expect to play collegiate sports, but is excited to have the opportunity.
“Yorktown helped me as a school district because they created a girls golf team in my sophomore year, which upped my chances of playing in college," Masci said.
